The Winter House

This time of year we get stories about updating your home for the winter. Here is the illustration I created for this story which is running soon. I love this simple child-like style for the houses with each one wearing a different article of clothing.

Art and the Apple Computer

Many of us are saddened by the passing of Steve Jobs as was I.

I wanted to share a bit of history I have had with the computer he created. I'm part of a generation of newspaper artists who switched from working with pens and inks and paints to creating art on the Mac. It was exciting and new territory for us as we learned how to create art using a mouse instead of a pen. As I look back, I remembered a drawing I did that I considered a break though on my part with creating art on a computer. It is the spider picture above, done for a story about a spider's anatomy. It was done on a Mac Classic like the one shown above. I later colorized the image. I was very proud of this drawing and have kept it on file all these years. As the years past we would upgrade to new computers and new possibilities became available with program upgrades and enhanced features on the computers we used. I have since created many wonderful pieces of art on Macs and PCs and continue to use and enjoy the computer as an art medium.

New art for Fall festival

New art for a story in next week's Go Triad about a seventeen days arts festival in Greensboro. I will be adding photos of some of the performers in a collage type effect later. I'm using two layers, a combination of  a painted acrylic pannel that was scanned in and placed in an adobe illustrator file as the bottom layer. The top layers are adobe illustrator vector images using the pen tool.

This is my latest illustration  for this Sunday's ideas page with a story about how we Americans are not out of the game yet. My inspiration was taken from vintage circus posters. My coworker commented that he liked seeing Uncle Sam in something other than his usual attire.

Winner Landmark Awards

I was a winner this week in our annual Landmark awards. My second place win was judged by Jeff Neumann, lead designer and illustrator at the Denver Post.

Margaret would give Sam (Hundley) a run for first place with a tighter stylistic focus. She produces work that has an attractive innocence, uses good rich color combinations, can stylize objects and critters without losing their representation understanding, and is creating work that seems to have a lot of personality. This image was one of his favorites from the portfolio of entries.
